This survey measures the shipments of milled rice to the domestic and export markets by U.S. rice millers and has been conducted for several decades; first by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and now by USA Rice. This survey is of importance to the U.S. rice industry because it provides reliable reference data on consumption trends across domestic market segments.

This year’s report includes a few changes, including for the first time reporting of shipments of rice for processing into rice flour. Consumption data based on consumer research from the Hartman Group, first introduced in the MY 2021-22 report, is once again included in this year’s report. The changes provide better representation of the industry, and a more accurate picture of which types and how much rice is consumed in the U.S. The addition of the consumer research tells us who is consuming rice in the U.S. and where it is being consumed.

A questionnaire was created and sent to U.S. rice milling firms, which provided data in the following categories:

  • Total quantity of milled rice shipments (domestic grown & imported);
  • Shipments of long grain domestic-grown rice;
  • Shipments of medium & short grain domestic grown rice;
  • Shipments of rice imported for resale; and
  • Shipments of Value Added Products

21 companies participated in this survey, representing 31 active rice mills, equaling last year’s participation. Two mills submitted surveys in 2022-23 that did not do so last year, and two mills that participated last year opted not to this year.
